Pasta Diva

Winner of the International Competition for Contemporary Music – Köster Preis

The alluring aroma of spices, the sharp chopping of knives, and the bubbling sound of boiling water.

Everyday gestures and often unnoticed sounds of cooking merge with violin, flute, accordion, percussion, and voice to create a multilayered symphony of the senses.

Musically inspired by the psychoacoustic sound world of Bellini’s opera Norma, the dramaturgy of Pasta Diva follows the structure of the Italian recipe Pasta alla Norma: each phase of cooking becomes a scene, each action a musical event. Classical acoustic instruments interpret and interact with the original kitchen sounds — naturally random, yet rhythmically and sonically distinctive — transforming them into a new musical composition that builds a bridge between the world of noise and the world of music.

This sonic landscape is interwoven with contemporary texts and poetry, including works by Federico García Lorca and Idea Vilariño, carefully selected for their resonance with the inner world of Bellini’s Norma — a character whose name simultaneously serves as a deliberate reference to the dish Pasta alla Norma. Through words and choreographic sequences, the ensemble shapes her inner conflicts and emotional states while exploring themes of love, reality, and illusion.

In Pasta Diva, theatre, contemporary music, and culinary art merge into a three-dimensional composition of movement, sound, and scent — an experience that asks to be heard, seen, and perhaps even… tasted.
